Job Responsibilities

Job summary:

Directly supervising the Line Strategic Planning Team Members under the Trade Development and Planning department, supporting PIL Line Management (Long-haul Trade, Intra-Asia Trade, Network Strategy & Partnerships, Trade Development & Planning) needs in coordinating, developing, and refining PIL Liner’s strategic game plan for sustained long term profitability and growth.

As the team manager, you will lead multiple workstreams for strategy projects under TDP, structure and plan end-to-end approaches to understand and solve strategic business challenges and then coordinate workstream leads and your own contributions to all aspects of the strategic process from initial research through qualitative and quantitative analysis, to planning and execution.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the development of PIL Monthly Monitor series of regular reports that track internal metrics & key performance indicators benchmarked against external market indicators and competitors’ performance, and measure PIL’s progress towards strategic growth objectives and associated initiatives:
    1. Market Volume (Demand) Developments and PIL Volume Market Share report to highlight if PIL is growing in tandem with the market or better 
    2. Market Capacity (Supply) and Services Development and PIL Capacity Market Share report to track PIL’s competitive positioning
    3. Liner Competitive Benchmarking of financial performance to see where PIL stands relative to its Main Line Operator competitors
    4. Support Trade Development and Planning team on improving Reefer and Project Cargo monthly monitor reports to highlight notable market developments, while they track PIL growth efforts in the segment
    5. Other Monthly Monitor insights for Trades & Network, such as on freight rates trends, schedule reliability, macroeconomic outlook, and other external PESTEL factors to highlight areas of opportunities and risks
  2. Line Management Business Strategy Projects & Business Review presentations for senior management and the board of directors such as:
    1. Line Management’s Quarterly Business Review & Outlook presentations to the Board, including Annual Budget presentations
    2. Review and tracking of Liner Strategy especially for management’s special focus areas such as Intra-Asia trade or special cargo (reefer & project cargo)
    3. Review of PIL Liner’s 5-to-10-year fleet renewal and vessel deployment plan and presentation to the Board of Directors and Investors
    4. Any other multi-year strategic plans, scenario planning, and financial models for the liner shipping business, which includes supporting risk management and contingency planning
    5. Conduct strategic planning workshops, primary research (e.g. customer surveys, interviews, focus groups), secondary (desktop) research and data analysis to develop strategic choices using hypothesis-driven thinking
    6. Support market-entry analysis and planning for new trades not currently covered by PIL (entry into new countries in existing trades or into new trades such as Mediterranean or Transpacific)
    7. Support feasibility studies, whitepapers and business cases for management’s proposed initiatives to the board for approval
    8. Other ad-hoc support to CTO and CEO on liner business unit strategy
  3. Help to lead and/or contribute to Line Management transformation efforts:
    1. Exploration and implementation of Line Management (Advanced) Analytics for Strategic Planning covering descriptive (business intelligence), diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive use cases on PIL data (analytics) platform; functional & technical requirements
    2. Developing line management target operating model to implement business unit strategy set by PIL management team

Job Requirements

  • Master of Business Administration paired with Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Accounting & Finance, Business, Maritime Studies, Supply Chain or any STEM (quantitative) discipline
  • 10 years combined relevant experience in areas such as:
    • Liner container shipping, in functional areas related to Trades, Pricing, Yield Management, Network Planning, Commercial/Sales
    • Experience in management consulting (strategy / implementation) is a plus
    • Experience in other adjacent industries related to Freight Forwarders or Beneficial Cargo Owners is a plus
  • Broad business knowledge of container shipping and/or related industries, as well as understanding of business functional areas including but not limited to:
    • Managerial Accounting, Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance
    • Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Corporate and Business Unit Strategy
    • Sales, Marketing, Pricing, Yield Management, Product Management
    • Operations Management / Supply Chain
    • Other general management areas such as scenario planning, human capital management, business law, sustainability, etc.
    • Project Management (waterfall, agile, hybrid methodologies) and related tools (such as Microsoft Project / Planner)
    • Statistical Data Analysis, Econometrics, or Advanced Analytics (Machine Learning, AI, Knowledge Graphs) going beyond traditional Business Intelligence Reporting is a plus Structured problem-solving, managerial communications and data skills including but not limited to:
    • Root cause analysis, issue trees, hypothesis trees
    • PowerPoint, Think-cell
    • Excel, PowerQuery, PowerBI
    • SQL, Python or R, data management skills are a plus
