We are seeking a General Manager – Mozambique Cluster to lead and drive PIL’s business operations across Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. The successful candidate will be accountable for overall business performance, commercial growth, operational excellence, financial management, and people leadership across the Cluster while ensuring alignment with PIL’s regional and global strategic objectives. This role requires a dynamic leader with strong business acumen, deep industry knowledge, and a proven track record of delivering sustainable growth within the shipping and logistics industry.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and manage PIL’s business operations across Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi in alignment with corporate strategy and business objectives.
- Develop and execute Cluster-wide business plans to drive sustainable growth, profitability, and market leadership.
- Assume full accountability for the Cluster’s financial and operational performance, including P&L responsibility.
- Identify market opportunities and develop strategies to strengthen PIL’s competitive position across the Cluster.
- Represent PIL and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, government authorities, port authorities, and industry partners.
- Ensure alignment of country and agency priorities with regional and global strategic initiatives.
Commercial & Business Development
- Drive commercial performance and business growth across Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, ensuring achievement of volume, revenue, and profitability targets.
- Develop and strengthen relationships with key customers, strategic partners, and government entities.
- Identify and capitalize on new business opportunities to expand PIL’s presence and market share across the Cluster.
- Monitor market trends, customer requirements, and competitor activities to support business growth and strategic decision-making.
- Foster strong customer relationships and support the development of strategic key accounts.
- Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction through service excellence and proactive stakeholder engagement.
Operational Management
- Oversee all operational activities to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable service delivery across the Cluster.
- Ensure achievement of agreed operational KPIs and service standards.
- Collaborate with regional and global teams to optimize business processes and improve operational efficiency.
- Maintain strong working relationships with port authorities, terminals, logistics providers, and vendors.
- Coordinate and align operational activities between Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi to drive efficiency and service reliability.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, service quality, and customer experience.
Financial Management
- Manage the Cluster’s budget, forecasts, and overall financial performance.
- Monitor revenue, operating expenses, profitability, and cash flow to ensure achievement of business objectives.
- Oversee working capital management, credit control, and financial governance.
- Ensure compliance with local statutory requirements, tax regulations, and PIL Group financial policies.
- Implement effective cost management measures while supporting business growth and operational excellence.
- Provide accurate business forecasting and performance reporting to Regional Management.
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing and geographically dispersed team across Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and customer focus.
- Drive employee engagement initiatives and promote PIL’s values throughout the organization.
- Build organizational capability through succession planning, talent management, coaching, and leadership development initiatives.
- Ensure effective workforce planning and support the development of future leaders within the Cluster.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with local laws, regulations, and PIL Group policies and governance standards.
- Proactively identify and mitigate commercial, operational, financial, legal, and regulatory risks.
- Maintain adherence to international shipping regulations and industry best practices.
- Promote a strong culture of ethics, compliance, and business integrity.
- Ensure effective implementation of risk management frameworks and internal controls across all Cluster markets.
MUST HAVE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Shipping, Maritime Studies, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 10–15 years of leadership experience within the shipping, container liner, logistics, maritime, or transportation industry.
- Proven track record of managing multi-country business operations with full P&L responsibility.
- Strong commercial acumen and demonstrated success in business development and customer relationship management.
- Experience leading multi-functional teams within a dynamic and complex business environment.
- Strong stakeholder management, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Solid understanding of shipping operations, agency management, and logistics value chains.
- Experience working within Africa and managing diverse markets is highly desirable.
