We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Accounts Controller to join our dynamic PIL South Africa team in Durban. The Accounts Controller will be responsible for maintaining accounting records, asset registers, compliance with SARS for VAT and ensuring accurate financial reporting. 

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Financial Recording and Reporting:

  • Accurately record financial transactions in the accounting system.
  • Prepare and review account reconciliations (balance sheet and income statement).
  • Maintain detailed records including general ledgers and journals.
  • Prepare cash flow statements and compile monthly finance reports.
  • Lead budget preparation and monthly variance analysis.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits.
     

VAT Compliance:

  • Reconcile input and output VAT.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns in compliance with SARS regulations.
     

Bank Reconciliation

  • Reconcile bank statements with accounting records.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies.

 

Fixed Assets Management:

  • Maintain accurate fixed asset registers and depreciation schedules.
  • Record acquisitions and disposals with proper documentation.
  • Conduct periodic physical inventories.

 

Insurance Administration:

  • Ensure new assets are insured and disposed assets are removed from policies.
  • Prepare insurance claim documentations and maintain detailed records.

 

Exchange Rate Management:

  • Calculate and input daily and monthly exchange rates.
  • Compile and distribute daily exchange rate reports
  • Process monthly rate revaluations in the accounting system.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Accounting Expertise: Strong understanding of accounting principles and practice
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze financial data and identify trends and variances.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate financial information clearly and concisely.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to lead and manage a team of accounting professionals.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and resolve financial issues.
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with industry-specific accounting and regulatory requirements.

 

MUST HAVE:

  • Matric + Accounting tertiary qualification.
  • Approximately 5 years of experience in the shipping industry.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and statutory/legal practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to deadlines.
